“Set goals, plan and achieve them!” This is a phrase that we have heard one too many times and it does make a lot of sense. How do you achieve something that you haven’t figured out yet? It’s not possible. But merely setting a goal is also not enough. How you set the goal also matters. It is not just a coming up with a random number and making it your mission to achieve it.

It so happens that we set a goal but deviate from it because of everything else that goes on around us. But what if we use a tried and tested formula to set the goal? What if we set a SMART goal?

By SMART I don’t just mean setting a realistic goal. I mean Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

Be SPECIFIC about what it is you want to achieve. Whether it’s building a team or doubling your revenue. Be as specific as you want, whether it’s in terms of numbers of growth rate. As long as you are specific about what you want, it will make a difference.  Has it happen that when someone is vague, it can be very irritating. So always be Specific.

If a goal isn’t MEASURABLE then it will not be accomplished because what doesn’t get measured, doesn’t get done. A quantitative measure is always helpful in keeping track of the progress.  What will tell you that you have reached your destination.

Make sure your goal is ACHIEVABLE, by which I mean that you need to be confident of being able to achieve it and drive your team to be able to do the same. It shouldn’t be easy but it also it shouldn’t be so farfetched that you are left scratching your head, wondering how to make it happen. Can’t plan to climb Mt Everest if you don’t want to buy mountaineering shoes.

The next thing to keep in mind is that the goal you set must be RELEVANT. The goal you set and what you have in mind for the growth of your company must complement each other. This will give you a lot more focus and direction. If you want to expand in a new market, deciding to hire is a Relevant Goal.

Setting a TIME BOUND goal is necessary otherwise we can delay and delay and keep procrastinating and never actually achieve what we want to. Having a time specific goal gives an extra kick of motivation because it increases the level of challenge. Would you write an exam with the same intensity, if the time limit was not there.

It’s not just an easy goal you should be setting to accelerate your business, it should be a SMART one!
